Star City takes its name from its first postmaster, Walter Starkey. The town sits about 18 kilometres east of Melfort and roughly 120 kilometres southeast of Prince Albert.
Agriculture has been the backbone of the local economy, and the town today offers a number of services as well as a small K-12 school.
Two historic buildings still stand in town. The Town Office Building was built between 1919 and 1920 for the Bank of Commerce, and it now houses a library. The Golden Age Club buildings are the other.
